We rely on our headlights every night to help us drive in the dark and get safely home, but, over time, headlights gradually become cloudy, due to extended sun exposure. The bright, hot sun causes discoloration of the protective plastic covers on headlights, which makes it harder for any light to shine through.
Cloudy headlights can lead to disaster
AAA conducted tests on two separate sedans, each 11 years old. These tests found that cloudy lights only emitted a shocking 22 percent of the light emitted by new headlights. This spells danger, especially when driving at night, as half of all auto accidents occur after dark. If our headlights are too foggy to produce any actual light, we won't be able to see hazards in the road. If we can't see a road hazard, we can't stop our car in time, or take other preventative steps to avoid a collision.
It is not just older cars that are the problem. Greg Brannon is the director of Automotive Engineering and Industry Relations with AAA. He and his team have discovered that, even on brand-new cars, headlights are not nearly as bright as they need to be.
“Headlights on the road in the U.S., even when new, don’t produce a sufficient amount of lighting, so any reduction in performance is a real safety issue,” he said.
He's right. As AAA has previously reported, halogen headlights on most new cars can barely illuminate the road properly when traveling as low as 40 mph, even with the use of high beams. When driving at night, if you can't see more than a few yards ahead of you, that can greatly exacerbate your risk of an accident.
